Encrypting RingCentral SMS messages to external mobile devices

I want to know whether RingCentral has plans or is aware if a way to encrypt messages that travel to/from external mobile devices.  This would be very helpful in health care and other fields where maintaining confidentiality is important.

How would you imagine reading / decrypting the encrypted contents on a mobile device?

Generally, there are two approaches if the native mobile device cannot handle message encryption / decryption:

  • Using a dedicated app to send/receive text messages that has encryption built-in, but both senders and receives would need to be on the same system. For example, Apple iMessage encrypts messages if both parties are using iOS, but not if one party is using another system.
  • Sending a link to an external app that performs authentication to decrypt a message.

So, could Ring Central be set up to send a link to an external app?

The integration would be different depending on the external app. Do you have one in mind or would you build one?

You can integrate sending this through RingCentral SMS by using our API or customizing our Embeddable Widget which powers our Google integration and can be configured to run as a stand-alone softphone app using Electro -  https://developer.ringcentral.com/embeddable-voice.html

If you are interested in an out-of-the-box solution, you should ask on our user (non-developer) community to reach the right people - https://community.ringcentral.com .

Here are some rough steps if you want to build this using our API.

  • When you send an SMS, you would need to encrypt the message and then send the link to or containing the encrypted message to the user.
  • When the user clicks on the link, it needs to load an application that will perform auth and decrypt the message.

This is a very good idea. Why not create custom mobile application that use ringcentral APIs in sending and receiving messages. The application can be installed in both the devices from where message is send and where message is received. It will be easy than sending to an external application.
